Schnellar Pauken, designed by Hans Schnellar, the timpanist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Gustav Mahler, circa 1910-20. These timpani were called "travel timps", "Reisepauken". To tune, the kettle (hammered copper) is pressed against the heads by the tuning handle. The bowl lifts upward against the head. This is a very simple but highly effective system making quick tuning changes very easy. A half turn is a second in intervals. These drums are presently used by Concertgebouw, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Concentus Musicus & Nikolaus Hanoncourt's ensemble. Ideal for Baroque repertoire, Mozart, Haydn and chamber music settings as well as larger symphonic works.
